What We Achieved in 2024
As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a year filled with hope, impact, and resilience.
At Everyday Refugees Foundation, we are dedicated to supporting refugees, local communities, and internally displaced people affected by conflict, natural disasters, discrimination, and poverty in different parts of the world. Our mission is to document stories, educate others, provide help, empower those in need, and raise public awareness. Thanks to your help and support in 2024, we launched several impactful campaigns and long-term projects, continued our efforts to sustain girls’ education in Pakistan, and expanded our Rooms for Hope initiative, which benefits hundreds of Syrian refugee families in Jordan.
In March, following its successful launch in December 2023, Bearing Witness photo exhibition by Muhammed Muheisen, founder and chairman of the Everyday Refugees Foundation, and Howard G. Buffett made its way to Amsterdam, marking it as the second European city to host this important photo exhibition. The exhibition shows the daily lives and challenges refugees and internally displaced people face in different parts of the world. Also in March, National Geographic released Finding the Light, a powerful documentary chronicling the life and accomplishments of Muhammed Muheisen, founder and chairman of the Everyday Refugees Foundation. Now available on Disney+ and Hulu, the series features the Everyday Refugees Foundation as an important part of Muheisen’s journey. This impactful release aligns with our mission to raise awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by refugees and internally displaced individuals, marking a significant achievement for us in 2024. Throughout the year, our team regularly visited Encourage, our school for Afghan refugee girls and boys located on the outskirts of Islamabad, Pakistan. In March and April, we welcomed new students and supplied additional resources to support their education. Since 2021, Everyday Refugees Foundation has fully sponsored and equipped this school, ensuring that over 230 girls and boys receive their right to education. This commitment reflects our dedication to empowering refugee children and creating a brighter future for them. https://everydayrefugees.org/encourage-school
In May, Muhammed Muheisen was interviewed for an episode of the National Geographic Explorer Classroom Storytelling Series called The Power of Photography. In this episode, he shared his insights on how photography can drive change and raise awareness. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/live/QxG9NAaAJ3E?si=ERPgmTsJ9hYrKcdx
In June, in honor of World Refugee Day, we highlighted Encourage school to emphasize the vital role of education as a fundamental right for all children. For refugees and internally displaced people, accessing education remains a significant challenge. Over the past four years, we have made considerable progress in overcoming this barrier by establishing a school and curriculum for Afghan refugee children in Pakistan. Our dedicated team of four teachers works hard to inspire and educate 140 girls and 90 boys, all committed to improving their futures. We continue to support their efforts by providing essential supplies and equipment, ensuring that these children have the resources needed to succeed. https://everydayrefugees.org/worldrefugeeday2024
Also in June, the Bearing Witness photo exhibition traveled to The Hague, the international city of peace and justice. The opening ceremony took place at Sociëteit de Witte, setting the stage for an impactful exhibition. https://everydayrefugees.org/bearing-witness-in-the-hague
The Bearing Witness photo exhibition is touring European capitals. In September, it opened at Palais Ghica Victoria in Bucharest, Romania. This remarkable exhibition features a powerful collection of images captured by Muhammed Muheisen and Howard G. Buffett, the Chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Spanning 25 years across the world, the images share untold stories that help create more awareness and raise the voices of those photographed. https://everydayrefugees.org/bearing-witness-in-bucharest/ and https://curatorial.ro/societate/bearing-witness-in-premiera-in-romania/
In October, after months of planning, we proudly opened Rooms for Hope in the Al Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. This exciting expansion of our initiative, which began in December 2022 to support Ukrainian refugees in Bucharest, now provides a safe and welcoming space for Syrian refugee children and their families. We successfully installed two functional caravans: one serves as an organized play area, and the other as a nursery. The inauguration was a festive occasion, filled with joy and activities as we welcomed the children and their parents. Since then, Rooms for Hope has been offering daily activities, creating a nurturing environment for families in the camp. https://everydayrefugees.org/rooms-for-hope
Through videos and photographs on our social media platforms, we shared hundreds of untold stories, raising awareness of the plight of refugees among millions of people worldwide. We documented, educated, helped, and empowered.
We are very thankful to all of you for supporting our mission and vision!
