Years passed her by and nothing changed in her life, the young girl whose family fled their war-torn country and took refuge in neighboring Jordan.
Zahra Mahmoud is a young refugee girl from Deir ez-Zor, Syria, her parents, Hassan and Samira, crossed the Syrian border with their children to Jordan in April 2015 after their home was destroyed in a bombing.
Here are a series of portraits of Zahra from left captured in August 2015, March 2016, November 2017 and most recently in May 2018.
Dreams are slowly fading away for Hassan and Samira who fled with their children in 2015 leaving their home, relatives and memories behind in hope to find a new safe home.
Her mother Samira cries every time she passes by school children going to their schools, thinking of her own children, “Our dreams are fading away, dying, every time I pass by and see school children I shed tears and become so sad for my own children and wonder what’s next for them? what’s the future, why my children can’t have the basic child’s right which is go to schools, why” These last years away from Syria made us older and my children are growing in front of my eyes and I can’t do much to them, I feel hopeless and desperate”. Samira said.
Her father Hassan used to be a taxi driver and own a farm in Deir ez-Zor, Syria. “We used to have a good life, we had a home, steady job and dreams, now we are living a very difficult life, left alone, living day by day but our worries are growing, have to dress and feed my children, keep them warm and safe, hope for a future that am not sure it will be brighter but I pray to god every day for a better one”. Hassan said.
Until now, neither Zahra nor her siblings go to school, as their parents can’t afford sending them, their priority is to feed them, dress them and keep them safe.
