Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, a little over 6 million women, children and the elderly have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries.
Among the 6 million Ukrainian refugees is Kateryna, a 90-year-old woman from Chernivtsi, whom our team met at the Romanian – Ukrainian border in Siret, Romania. Early on the morning of March 5th, Kateryna, a wheelchair user, and her 70-year-old daughter Lyda were forced to flee their hometown fearing for their own lives.
In a tent just by the border in Romania, Cristina, a 28-year-old mother from Chernivtsi, reached for her 4-year-old daughter Karyna, comforting her while they rested with other refugee families from Ukraine. “We were so scared when we heard about the Russian attack on Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. We left everything behind,” said Cristina, whose husband remained in Ukraine. She hopes to be reunited with him.
Since March 4, a team from Everyday Refugees Foundation has been on the ground at the Romanian – Ukrainian border to give a hand to the people fleeing the war.
